5 myths about eco-friendly home cleaning products

Eco-friendly cleaners and detergents for the home have long been in stable demand among people who care about their health and the environment. It must be understood that, first of all, the line is aimed at preserving nature, and its composition is selected precisely for this.

However, not only environmentalists give their choice to products with the "eco" icon - people with allergies, as well as those who live in private houses, the sewerage of which is carried out by installing a septic tank, cannot do without them. Bacteria in a septic tank die under the influence of non-natural household cleaners, they are extremely susceptible to chlorine and aggressive surfactants . This leads to the need for a costly procedure for pumping and restarting the sewer system.

At the same time, eco-product lines are often surrounded by a mass of unreliable information, some of these common myths will be discussed below.

Myth #1. Eco- friendly home cleaning products are no different from ordinary ones.

This myth did not just appear. Often, manufacturers place unconfirmed "ECO" and "BIO" icons on the labels. The law does not restrict such actions and does not require any mandatory certificates.

In order not to fall for the marketing tricks of manufacturers, the buyer can check for voluntary eco-certificates . Certificates are issued by independent evaluation companies and confirm that the products pass the control of the environmental friendliness of the production and formula.

Eco products are still different from ordinary ones: they do not contain caustic acids and alkalis, phosphates, chlorine, SLES and SLS . The main washing effect is achieved due to the presence of non-ionic surfactants and biodegradable surfactants synthesized from plant materials. These substances completely dissolve in water without polluting the soil and groundwater.

Myth #2. Safe dish detergent does not remove grease well

Well or weakly split fat - completely depends on the composition of eco-chemistry. If it contains nothing but soda, you should not expect efficiency when washing the chicken pan with cold water. Soda, which is a mild abrasive, can indeed successfully wash food stains from dishes, but it is powerless against a film of fat.

based on vegetable raw materials are added to biodegradable detergents , and alkalis, acids (except citric, lactic, acetic) and chlorine are completely absent. These ingredients allow the gels to successfully break down fat, while they themselves are easily and completely washed off with water and are less aggressive compared to those used in conventional gels.

Myth #3. Fast consumption of eco-friendly home cleaning products

For the most part, this myth was born due to the household habits of housewives - when a couple of drops on a sponge form a huge cap of dense foam (and eco detergents foam much weaker). A small amount of foam washes dishes just as well and rinses off more easily, which helps reduce water consumption.

Eco household chemicals for cleaning the house usually have a liquid texture due to the absence of thickeners in the cleaning products, and it visually gives the impression that one drop is not enough to wash off the pollution. Abundant foam is not an indicator of high washing power.

Myth number 4. All hypoallergenic household chemicals for the home are safe for allergy sufferers

Unfortunately, it is not. Allergy has a different nature, it does not necessarily manifest itself on surfactants. Components of natural extracts, citric acid and even caustic soda can cause an exacerbation. The compounds are less dangerous, but it is too optimistic to guarantee the absence of allergies in a person prone to it.

Myth number 5. Eco products are expensive

In online and regular household chemical stores, you can find quite affordable products with the Eco label. For example, eco-friendly BioTrim laundry cleaning products cost the same and even cheaper than conventional ones.

Biodegradable surfactants. Surfactants are responsible for foaming. Products that do not have them in their composition will not fulfill their function - to wash and clean, but eco-household chemicals contain non-ionic and amphoteric species - the safest. In addition to the ability to completely decompose, these substances practically do not irritate the skin, but they are able to form a good dense foam, wash off grease and other types of contaminants that are insoluble in water.

Hypoallergenic detergents are often made from plant materials such as extracts of soap root, soap nut, and various oil crops.

Organic acids are essential for cleaning sanitary ware and heavy soiling on hard, non-absorbent surfaces. Oxalic and citric acid cope with such tasks perfectly, and their danger is incomparably less than that of hydrochloric acid, which is used in the production of conventional products. Hydrogen peroxide is responsible for the whitening function, which releases active oxygen during a chemical reaction. This achieves the effect of real whitening, and not "optical whiteness".

Natural oils give gentle pleasant aromas, do not have an aggressive effect on the mucous membranes and respiratory organs (unlike many artificial flavors), many of them have disinfectant and bactericidal properties.

Conclusion: detergents are environmentally friendly for nature and people when used as intended.
